The Problem
Noxious or offensive odors can be a problem in almost any environment. Reducing or eliminating odors in municipal, industrial and commercial environments to human comfort levels can be an on-going challenge. Odor problems are wide ranging and are typically from known point source areas.
The proximity to heavy vehicular traffic, industrial or manufacturing operations, wastewater and sewage treatment facilities can result in odors which cause discomfort for employees, customers, and the general public. Large assembly area such as auditoriums, sports arena’s, casino’s, hospitals and airports, present special challenges since simple ventilation systems often lack satisfactory make-up air quality to insure relief. Tobacco smoke is of particular concern in many environments and causes loss of non-smoker business, staff downtime from sickness, and higher cleaning costs for smelly and stained walls, carpets and furnishings.
ASHRAE Standard 62 prescribes the use of outdoor air for ventilation purposes.
Many situations exists, (EPA indicates at least 50% of the time) which cause unacceptable outdoor air being brought in to your facility by your air conditioning system. In the case where odors are present, the control of contaminants by ventilation actually distributes the odors rather than controlling them.
